This 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS 'Super Sport' Two Seater wears coachwork by Touring. Its chassis number relates to one of the first Super Sport 6C1750s dating from the first year of production, 1929. Just 121 of these third series Super Sports were built (with and without superchargers) according to Alfa Romeo's records; they were numbered 0312851 to 0312971. The early history of 0312901 is unknown. Whatever its early history, the car appeared in South Africa owned by Lex Williamson in 1936.

The Carrozzeria Touring was an Italian coachbuilder. The company was founded in Milan in 1926 by Felice Bianchi Anderloni. Touring made a name for itself with the patented Superleggera (Italian for “super light”) construction. At the end of 1966, Carrozzeria Touring had to close its doors forever.

In winter 1928 the almost incredible 'Duesenberg Model J' was announced. The new model premiered at the Importers' Salon in New York. Fred Duesenberg had created his masterpiece: the large chassis with a 3.60 or 3.90 m wheelbase was very solid with 20.6 cm high side members. Of course there were hydraulic brakes again, but this time with drums with a diameter of 38.1 cm. There was also oversized steering and a 100-liter tank. The huge 6.9-liter engine with two overhead camshafts and a five-bearing, 67.5 kilogram alloy steel crankshaft had a double carburetor from Schebler and even chrome-plated intake ducts. The transmission with three forward gears and the central lubrication supplemented the offer. All in all, the Duesenberg J was perhaps the most carefully designed automobile of its time.

Legends are about the performance of the engine. The official figure was 265 SAE-PS, which corresponded to approximately 210 PS according to the DIN standard. The specified maximum speed was 185 km / h, which was actually achieved with a touring car model. The gasoline consumption was regularly about 21-29 liters per 100 kilometers, but this was within the scope of other luxury automobiles with comparable engine performance. In this context, it should be noted that it has become natural to classify the surviving Duesenberg J according to the engine numbers, not the chassis numbers. This Düsenberg J has the chassis number 2605 and the engine number 577. The car was made for a businessman from Boston in 1936.

The Rollston Company was an American manufacturer of automobile bodies and was founded in 1921. In 1938, Rollston went bankrupt. The company was dissolved. The New York City-based company manufactured exclusive superstructures for chassis from North American and European top-class manufacturers. The closest business relationship was with Packard. In the 1930s, Rollston also manufactured a total of 57 bodies for the Duesenberg Model J and JN.

This Bugatti from the Mullin Automotive Museum in Oxnard, CA., has such a different look and coach work from what you normally see on so many of these fine cars. It is part of The Schlumpf Reserve Collection, which Peter Mullin purchased most of in 2008. The Schlumpf collection along with the John Shakespeare collection, that this car was in when the Shlumpf’s bought it 1963 in its entirety, are both a story in themselves.

This Bugatti Type 40 Body 'Camionnette', chassis 40485 (engine No. 714), was delivered with an enclosed body by Gangloff to the original owner. A later owner in the 1930’s had that body converted into a “break de chasse” or “shooting break,” which many times was used for hunting.

This Delahaye 135 Coupé des Alpes has been equipped with a unique closed body ("Coach Aerodynamique") by Labourdette. The design for this vehicle dates back to 1935 and was obviously inspired by the Jaguar SS One Airline Coupe. Labourdette was a successful French coachbuilder.

This Bugatti T 44 (# 44477) belongs today to the Sicilian Zio Gino. The body was made by Carrozzeria Ghia, founded in 1915 by Giacinto Ghia in Turin. Giacinto Ghia ran the company until his death in 1944. The brown side panels look like crocodile skin. But it's not real skin. This artificial crocodile skin effect was achieved using the triplex printing process. And this in 1929!

This glorious Hispano-Suiza dual-cowl phæton bodied by the top Paris carrossier Million-Guiet once belonged to the lovely Norma Talmadge, one of the highest-paid film stars of the 1920s. Her brother-in-law was the famous silent comedian Buster Keaton. The flying stork mascot of the Hispano-Suiza, incidentally, was based on the squadron badge of France’s First World War ace of aces Georges Guyneymer, whose SPAD biplane was powered by a Hispano-Suiza V8 engine.
