British Camper Mentality

In the 1950s the British company Martin Walter found a new field of activity. A lot of British people were demanding a vehicle in which they could go traveling around and nevertheless they did not need to give up their homely feel. Due to the extremely popular minibuses among private people, first wishes were that you could be on the way for some days and could also sleep inside.

In 1957, the first camper was leaving the Martin Walter plant in this mini travel version. But at the beginning there was one disadvantage: the travelers could not stand upright because of the low internal height. However, Martin Walter found a solution to solve it pragmatically. A wedge shaped piece was removed from the roof of the small van and replaced by a pop-top. Now the next designation on the road could be reached with retracted roof and on the camping site the interior space was appropriately high by popping up of the roof. This brilliant and also simple solution was only a part of the ingenuity of the company Martin Walter, the second one was the transformation of the seating accommodations into a bed, which sophisticated mechanics was patented by the company under the name Dormatic. This patented solution was obviously so decisive and forward-looking for the management of Martin Walter that they renamed the company from Martin Walter to Dormobile Ltd.

In the British camper scene the new company’s name became an established term very soon and the plant obtained a business-like breakthrough of the reconstruction of conventional small vans into camper mobiles. The built-in system of Dormobile was perfected in the meantime so that they were able to equip a produced in series mini bus with a complete interior.

From 1960, the Commer FC was also belonging to the team, which was visible on the missing round wheel housings on all four wheels. The van was produced until 1983.
