The Nobleman with the noble Benz
At the beginning of the 1930s, Baron von Lüttwitz wanted to buy a feudal, but also very sporty and fast convertible. Since money apparently played no role, he opted for the most powerful Mercedes-Benz available at the time, the SSK model, which was only produced 33 times. SSK stood for ‘Supersport kurz’ (super-sport short).
He also wanted a unique body. Due to the good reputation for its convertible bodies, the Mercedes chassis was delivered to the company ‘Gläser’ in Dresden.
As it seemed, the Dresden craftsmen did not intervene significantly in the proven design of the bonnet and the front section. As a result, the striking Mercedes look was retained. This did not apply at all to the rear area. A long-tapering rear section with a subtle tapering in width was designed with an optically smooth surface.
The seamlessly appearing cover for the recessed spare wheel most probably significantly reduced the trunk space. The storage of the folding roof was also integrated into the rear section. In order to underline the sportiness and the aerodynamic idea the rear wheel arches featured a complete covering.
According to the current state of knowledge, this Mercedes-Benz did not survive to the present day.
