The Alfa Romeo RL was presented on October 13, 1921 in Milan and subsequently at the London Motor Show in 1921 and, also given the initial interest, it was put into series production in different versions. With the RL, Alfa Romeo also completed its range with a model that occupied the previously empty medium-high segment of the market.

Four versions of this model were produced between 1922 and 1927, initially the Normale and the Sport were launched which in 1925 were replaced by the Turismo and the Super Sport. As was the custom of the time, the car was not sold as a complete car directly from the house but as a bare chassis to be bodied at will. Several Italian (Castagna, Falco, Zagato) and foreign (J.D. Farre, Vanden Plas) coachbuilders tried their hand at these chassis, creating different types of cars depending on the type of chassis and purpose such as torpedo, closed sedans, Weymann bodies, limousines and also spider.
