1940 BMW 328 "Bügelfalte Roadster" Mille Miglia #71

There was a war in Europe - but in Italy the legendary Mille Miglia car race was revived. This time, however, as a triangular course between Brescia, Cremona and Mantua, called the Gran Premio di Brescia delle Mille Miglia. One lap was 167km and had to be driven nine times. In 1940, the BMW 328 streamlined roadster "Bügelfalte" was part of a quintet of BMW 328 racing cars - two closed vehicles, three open - that took part in the Mille Miglia. The race director was Ernst Loof. The "Bügelfalte" with race number 71 came sixth in the overall classification.

What makes the car so extraordinary is its nickname "Bügelfalte". The car received this because all the fenders have a kind of metal fold that is not found on any other model in the 328 series. A car with creases. A unique piece! The racing car (chassis number 85032), which was originally built in Eisenach in 1937 and won the Mille Miglia - the classic Brescia-Rome-Brescia car race - in its class a year later, received this special feature in 1939 in the BMW racing department in Munich. The BMW designer Wilhelm Kaiser created this extraordinary body.
